Baldur’s Gate 3: why Bless disappears when you cast another spell
The normal Bless spell requires concentration. If the same caster starts another concentration spell, Bless ends even if it had turns remaining. The limit belongs to each caster, not the whole party, so assigning two effects to different casters changes the plan.

Read the concentration tag before casting
A remaining duration does not override the concentration requirement. Inspect the spell description before adding another buff, control effect or area spell. The same caster cannot maintain two ordinary concentration spells together.
A useful turn check is to name the effect you would lose before selecting the next spell. If the replacement is deliberate, proceed with that cost in mind. If the existing effect still matters more, choose an action that does not require replacing it.
Work through Bless and Shield of Faith
The standard Bless and Shield of Faith spells both require concentration. If caster A casts Bless and then casts Shield of Faith, caster A does not retain both concentration effects.
If caster A maintains Bless while caster B casts Shield of Faith, each is maintaining their own spell. This is an assignment example, not a promise that both characters know those spells or have the resources to cast them. Check the actual party’s spell access and turn costs before choosing the two-caster plan.
Separate replacement from damage-related loss
Taking damage while concentrating can trigger a Constitution saving throw. Failing it ends concentration. This is a different cause from voluntarily selecting a second concentration spell.
When an effect unexpectedly ends, check the combat log and the caster’s state before recasting. A caster repeatedly exposed to incoming damage may need a safer position as well as a new spell slot. A higher spellcasting ability score is not the same thing as improving that Constitution save.
Inspect the exact source of an apparent exception
An effect with the same familiar name can come from an item rather than the ordinary spell. The community spell documentation notes item-granted Bless effects that do not use the standard concentration requirement.
Read the actual effect and item description instead of treating a matching icon as proof that the rule changed. Likewise, ending some effects can have additional consequences. Review what you are replacing before assuming that switching concentration is a free, consequence-free cleanup action.
When your plan breaks
| What happens | What to change |
|---|---|
| Bless ends immediately after my next spell | Check whether the same caster selected another concentration spell. |
| The effect disappears after the caster is hit | Read the combat log for a concentration saving throw and inspect the caster’s conditions. |
| Two party buffs work together in someone else’s example | Check which character maintains each effect; the limit is per caster. |
| An item’s Bless seems to behave differently | Inspect that item’s actual granted effect instead of applying the ordinary spell description automatically. |
Quick answers
Can the whole party have only one concentration spell?
No. The restriction applies to each caster. Different casters can maintain their own effects.
Does a ten-turn duration mean Bless cannot end early?
No. Losing concentration can end the standard spell before its duration runs out.
Should I simply recast after every unexpected loss?
First identify whether the cause was replacement, damage or another condition. Otherwise you may repeat the same loss with another spell slot.
