Clash Royale Champion abilities: check the active copy and Elixir
Placing a Champion and activating its special ability are separate Elixir decisions. If the expected ability does not work, check the eligible active Champion and the current resource requirement before assuming every copy on the arena can trigger it.

Check the deck slot before the battle
Supercell's support page places Champions in the Hero Slot or Wild Slot. Check the slots available on your own account and the deck's validation message rather than applying an old deck-building rule from memory.
Unlock requirements and card progression can change. The practical pre-match check is whether the intended Champion is accepted in the intended slot in your current deck and mode.
Leave room in the plan for the ability
Champion special abilities use Elixir. A deployment that you can afford does not establish that you will also have the resources for the follow-up action when you want it.
Before committing, identify the purpose of the ability in that exchange. If your plan depends on activating it immediately, read the current ability requirement and account for it along with any other card you intend to play. Do not treat the deploy cost as the complete planned spend.
Identify the eligible copy when more than one is active
Supercell states that when more than one Champion of the same type is active, only the most recently placed one can use the special ability. An indicator beside the Champion's health bar identifies the eligible one.
For example, two same-type Champions are present and you expect the older one to perform the action. Check the indicator before building the next move around it. Do not infer that every visible duplicate has its own independently available ability.
When your plan breaks
| What happens | What to change |
|---|---|
| The deck does not accept my Champion where I put it | Check the available Hero and Wild slots and the current deck validation message. |
| I deployed the Champion but cannot perform the follow-up | Check the ability's displayed Elixir requirement and current availability separately from the deployment cost. |
| The older same-type Champion is not using the ability | Look for the eligible-copy indicator; the most recently placed copy is the one described by the support rule. |
| An old deck guide contradicts the current slot screen | Use the current mode and Supercell rules rather than assuming an older restriction still applies. |

Supercell describes abilities as using Elixir. Plan for the ability as well as the deployment.
Can all active copies of the same Champion use their ability?
