Dressmaker fabric direction: fix the cutting layout before sewing

Dressmaker's publisher says the pattern layout and cutting direction determine how fabric appears on the finished dress. Plan the panels before sewing and decorating. A later bow or trim does not answer a fabric-direction choice made at the cutting stage.

Choose the panel plan before cutting

The game allows individual fabric choices for garment panels and distinguishes alignment to the grain from a bias cut. Decide which appearance you want and inspect how the pattern pieces are arranged. Keep the customer's request or your own design sketch visible as the reference for those choices.

Use the mannequin preview to inspect the result

The published workflow includes arranging and cutting the pattern, previewing on a mannequin and sewing. For an illustrative striped design, compare the direction across neighboring panels before committing to the later stages. If the visual result differs from the plan, trace it back to the panel and cutting layout instead of changing unrelated accessories.

Add decoration after the fabric decision is clear

Buttons, bows, appliqué and lace provide further design choices. Apply them to the garment you intended to construct, then inspect the overall result against the brief. This checklist does not claim a universal pattern orientation or customer-score formula; it keeps separate decisions in the order where you can understand their effects.

Quick answers

What should I decide before sewing?

The garment panel layout, chosen fabric and intended direction, checked in preview.

Is a bias cut always the correct choice?

Choose it for the intended design rather than treating one orientation as universally better.
