Elden Ring heavy roll: check equipped weight before buying a new build
If your dodge suddenly becomes a heavy roll, inspect the equipment screen first. Compare equipped weight with maximum equip load and read the displayed load category. A small equipment change can cross a load boundary without changing the weapon you are currently holding.

Use the load category as the first observation
The equipment screen shows both numerical load and the current category. Start there instead of diagnosing a different roll entirely from how an enemy encounter felt.
Medium load requires staying below the heavy-load boundary around 70 percent of maximum load. Do not plan on an exact rounded boundary from a guide: leave a margin and confirm the category shown by the game after your equipment changes.
Calculate a change before committing to it
Here is an illustrative calculation with invented equipment totals, not a named armor set: 34 units equipped against a maximum of 50 is 68 percent. Adding two units gives 36 divided by 50, or 72 percent. That small addition crosses the relevant boundary.
Use your own displayed values in the same comparison. If an upgrade changes maximum load as well as equipment weight, recalculate both sides. Comparing only the new item’s weight can miss the result of the complete setup.
Review the whole equipped setup
Look through all equipped slots, including backup armaments, before removing a piece you need for your main plan. The currently selected hand weapon is not the complete equipment screen.
Try a reversible change in a quiet place and check the category again. Remove something you can do without, then repeat one roll to compare the animation. Do not discard an important item or rebuild the entire character just to test whether equipment load caused the change.
Choose between weight reduction and more capacity
Endurance can increase maximum equip load, while lighter equipment reduces the weight you are asking the build to carry. Those are different ways to address the same displayed ratio.
Consider the cost before deciding. A lighter backup setup may solve an immediate problem; investing levels may serve a longer-term equipment plan. Neither choice guarantees that a dodge will avoid a particular attack. Once the load category is correct, evaluate enemy timing and positioning separately.
When your plan breaks
| What happens | What to change |
|---|---|
| Rolling changed after equipping one small item | Recheck the complete weight-to-capacity ratio and the displayed category. |
| I am not holding the heavy backup weapon | Inspect all equipped slots, not only the active hand selection. |
| My arithmetic says I am exactly on a boundary | Leave a margin and trust the game’s category display rather than a rounded percentage. |
| I fixed the heavy roll but still take hits | Separate the equipment issue from attack timing, direction and positioning. |
Quick answers
Is the example a recommended armor set?
No. Its totals are invented solely to show how a two-unit change can cross a load boundary.
Must I respec to fix a heavy roll?
Not necessarily. First inspect optional equipped weight and test a lighter setup. Then decide whether your intended build needs more capacity.
