Football Manager 26 formation changes: check In Possession and Out of Possession
FM26 allows separate In Possession and Out of Possession formations. A team changing shape after losing the ball may therefore be following the second setup you configured. Inspect both phases and the assigned player roles before changing the entire tactic.

Identify the phase behind the observed shape
The publisher's Tactics guide provides In Possession, Out of Possession, Both and Combined views. Start with whether your side has the ball at the moment you are reviewing. Compare that moment with the corresponding setup rather than expecting one diagram to describe every phase.
Check the role as well as the position
FM26 assigns roles for the different possession states. Inspect the selected player in each phase, including the role information in player reports. A position that looks suitable in one shape does not by itself explain what the same player is meant to do in the other.
Review one player's transition before rebuilding everything
For an illustrative review, select the player whose position surprised you after possession changed. Compare both assignments and the relevant visualizer views, then observe another appropriate sequence. Change the assignment that explains the problem before replacing several unrelated instructions. This procedure does not imply that every unexpected movement is automatically correct or that a shape guarantees results.
When your plan breaks
| What happens | What to change |
|---|---|
| The team uses another shape after losing the ball | Compare the Out of Possession setup with the observed phase. |
| One player's movement differs between phases | Inspect both position and role assignments for that player. |
| A copied formation gives a different result | Compare the two phase setups and the actual players, not just one formation label. |
Quick answers
What should I keep when reviewing a tactic?
The possession phase, selected player's assignments and the observed sequence that prompted the change.
Does one shape suit every squad?
Assess player suitability and match context separately from understanding the dual-formation interface.
