Hollow Knight lost Geo: recover the Shade before risking another death
In ordinary Hollow Knight play, the Shade holds the Geo lost on death and leaves the SOUL meter damaged. Defeating it restores that Geo and repairs the meter. Dying again before recovery replaces the old Shade, so the earlier Geo is lost.

Plan the return before following the shortest path
Check the Shade marker and identify the dangerous part of the route. Illustrative decision: if the direct path repeats the exact jump that killed you, pause and choose a safer approach or recovery option. Reaching the same hazard sooner is not the same as improving the chance of recovery.
Use Jiji when the service is accessible
The community reference places Confessor Jiji behind a Simple-Key door in Dirtmouth. Her service summons an unrecovered Shade in exchange for a Rancid Egg. Compare that option when the original location is especially awkward; check access and the item before planning around it.
Finish the recovery and check the result
Summoning is not the final step: Jiji’s reference says the Shade must still be defeated. After recovery, check the Geo total and SOUL meter. If you already died again, distinguish repairing the current meter from recovering the earlier Shade’s lost Geo.
