Bannerlord more horses but lower speed: inspect the herding penalty

More animals can reduce campaign movement speed through a herding penalty. Hover the speed indicator and inspect the breakdown before buying more horses to fix a slow party. Carrying capacity and movement speed are different results of the inventory decision.

Read the named speed modifiers

The cited player cases identify the speed tooltip's herding entry as the useful observation. Start with that breakdown rather than the final speed alone. A speed change after buying an animal should be compared with the modifier that changed, not automatically blamed on terrain or a missing cavalry unit.

Inspect the whole animal inventory

The player explanations discuss spare animals and livestock, not only the horse currently ridden. Compare what the party is carrying with the people managing it and the transport function you need. Do not assume every animal serves the same riding or carrying role.

Compare one acquisition against its actual benefit

For example, a small party adds another carrying animal and becomes slower despite gaining capacity. Read whether herding now offsets the benefit you wanted. Assess which animals the route needs and compare the speed breakdown after a deliberate change. This avoids copying a fixed animal-to-troop formula without accounting for the current party and perks.

Quick answers

What should I note before changing the inventory?

The speed breakdown, animal mix and carrying role you need for the next route.

Does greater carrying capacity always imply faster movement?

No. Compare capacity and the speed modifiers as separate outcomes.

The symptom and herding diagnosis come from original Bannerlord player cases. Their disputed exact thresholds are not adopted. The small-party case is illustrative.
