NARAKA counters: why parrying every melee hit loses the exchange

NARAKA’s official quick start describes a three-way melee interaction: common attacks disrupt counters, counters answer blue focus strikes, and blue focus strikes beat common attacks. A counter attempt is a specific response, not a shield against every move.

Reviewed 2026-10-15 · Basic melee interactions from the official quick start; special weapons, abilities and other focus states need their own rules

Identify the state before choosing the input

Watch whether the incoming action is a common attack or a blue focus strike. If you repeatedly counter common attacks, the basic cycle itself explains the problem. Do not diagnose every failed counter as connection delay before checking what you tried to counter.

Practice one readable exchange

Illustrative drill: in a controlled practice situation, alternate a clearly identified common attack with a clearly identified blue focus strike. Name the incoming state, choose the response and observe the result. Add timing and movement only after you can distinguish those two cases reliably.

Keep special cases separate

The official weapon guide describes additional states and weapon-specific actions. Use the in-game reference for the exact move you are struggling with. A basic blue-focus rule is not proof that a different-colored special move, hero skill or every multi-hit sequence behaves identically.

Quick answers

Can I counter every damaging action?

No. The basic cycle concerns particular melee states.

Should I memorize a universal frame value from this page?

No. Practice recognition and check the current weapon-specific reference.
