Overwatch Mercy healing: check the staff action and the ally's actual health
Mercy's base Caduceus Staff has different healing and damage-boost actions. Check which action is active and which ally is targeted before assuming the beam has failed. Seeing a connection is not enough to establish that the selected action is healing that ally.

Read the action and your control binding
Blizzard's staff notes distinguish primary-fire healing from secondary-fire damage boost. Check your current bindings and ability description rather than relying only on a remembered button. Additional mode effects should be read separately from those base roles.
Observe the correct ally's resulting health
Confirm the actual beam target, then compare its health while the intended action is active. If the ally is taking damage, the health bar shows the combined result of recovery and incoming damage. A falling bar during that exchange alone does not measure the staff's healing output.
Separate the input check from the combat decision
For an illustrative practice check, use an appropriate setup with an ally who has missing health and distinguish the two staff actions. In a live fight, then decide whether healing or supporting damage serves the immediate situation. Keep the input diagnosis separate from a claim that one beam mode should always be held for an entire match.
When your plan breaks
| What happens | What to change |
|---|---|
| The beam is connected but recovery is not what I expected | Check the active staff action and selected ally. |
| The ally's bar still falls during a firefight | Account for incoming damage before treating the net health change as the healing rate. |
| A mode or upgrade changes the effect | Read its current description alongside the base staff function. |
Quick answers
What should I compare in a controlled check?
The same target, selected action, missing health and whether incoming damage is present.
Are the numbers in an old balance note current?
Do not assume so. This checklist uses the function distinction and leaves current values to the game.

Blizzard's August 2024 notes explicitly distinguish the base staff actions. Their numerical balance values are not presented as current. The comparison is an exercise, not a measured healing test.
