Red Dead Redemption 2 lost Legendary pelt: check the Trapper before reloading
Losing a Legendary Animal pelt does not necessarily erase its crafting contribution. Rockstar says the defeated animal is recorded by the Trapper and the required Legendary materials can become available there. The cash sale of the lost pelt is a separate loss.

Identify what was lost
First establish that this was a Legendary Animal encounter, not an ordinary hunting pelt. Rockstar's support guidance addresses cases such as a lost pelt, an animal falling into water or an animal that cannot be skinned.
Then separate the outcomes you care about: receiving money for the physical pelt and retaining access to Legendary crafting materials. Treating those as the same outcome can lead to an unnecessary reload or repeated search.
Allow the Trapper's materials to update
One procedure in Rockstar's article is to leave the Legendary Animal area, allow two in-game days to pass by sleeping or waiting through game time, and then speak to the Trapper.
Do not judge the result from an immediate visit under unchanged conditions. For example, if the pelt was lost during travel and the crafting material is not yet visible, follow the documented update sequence before concluding the hunt must be repeated.
Check crafting requirements separately from the missing sale
Rockstar distinguishes the lost pelt's sale money from the Legendary materials needed for crafting. Verify the specific Trapper item and its remaining requirements after the update rather than looking only for a physical pelt to sell.
This does not establish that every other ingredient for a desired item is present. Read the complete recipe. If the documented case still does not match, retain the animal name, location and game state for a focused support report instead of assuming all hunting inventory follows this exception.
When your plan breaks
| What happens | What to change |
|---|---|
| The Legendary pelt fell into water or vanished | Check Rockstar's Legendary-material procedure before assuming the crafting contribution is permanently lost. |
| The Trapper did not show the material immediately | Leave the area, allow the documented in-game time to pass and check again. |
| I can craft but did not receive the pelt's sale money | Crafting access and a cash sale are separate outcomes in Rockstar's explanation. |
| A recipe still lists another missing ingredient | Inspect that ingredient separately; the Legendary-material exception does not satisfy every requirement. |
Quick answers
Does a lost Legendary pelt always mean I need to reload an older save?
No. Rockstar provides a Trapper-material update procedure for the documented lost or unskinnable cases.
Does this apply to every ordinary pelt?
This support guidance concerns Legendary Animals. Do not generalize it to all hunting inventory or Red Dead Online.

The retained-material rule and two-day procedure come from Rockstar Support. The decision to check crafting before reloading is editorial advice. No save file was altered or Legendary hunt independently replayed for this guide.
