RimWorld freezer checklist: why food still rots or causes poisoning

A freezer’s target temperature is a setting, not proof that food is frozen. Check the actual room and food readouts first. If colonists are getting food poisoning, investigate the kitchen and cook separately: making a meal cold does not undo contamination introduced during cooking.

Confirm that the cooler is cooling the intended room

A cooler moves heat from its blue side to its red side. The blue side belongs toward the freezer. Check its power connection, operating state and target temperature before adding another unit.

Inspect the food rather than assuming the installation worked. A room that is merely refrigerated is not necessarily frozen. If the readout is warmer than your target, the next question is what is preventing the room from reaching that target.

Give the hot side somewhere to discharge

The exhaust side matters. Pointing it outdoors is the simplest arrangement to inspect. A small sealed room behind the cooler can collect heat instead of disposing of it; the cooler then has a harder job.

Consider a freezer beside a tiny roofed utility closet. If the blue side is correctly oriented but the closet becomes hot, lowering the freezer target again does not fix the exhaust arrangement. Correct the hot-side destination, then watch the room temperature before spending components on extra cooling.

Check the room boundary and workload

The freezer needs an enclosed boundary and adequate roofing to maintain a temperature different from outdoors. Check missing roof tiles and openings. Frequent traffic, a larger room and hotter conditions can also make a design harder to cool.

Change one suspected cause at a time. First restore the room boundary, then examine door traffic and heat load, then decide whether more cooling is needed. There is no reliable rule that one cooler always supports a particular room size in every climate.

Treat vomiting as a second investigation

For cooked meals, food-poisoning risk depends on the preparation area’s cleanliness and the cook’s food-poisoning chance. A cold storage room does not establish that a meal was prepared safely.

If meals remain frozen but people are getting sick, inspect where those meals were cooked, who made them and the kitchen’s cleanliness. Keep this investigation separate from the freezer problem. Fixing storage should stop one source of food loss; it does not prove every already prepared meal is uncontaminated.

Quick answers

Does selecting a freezing temperature guarantee frozen food?

No. The device attempts to reach the target. Check the room and item readouts to confirm the result.

Can I fix a dirty kitchen by making the freezer colder?

No. Investigate the preparation conditions and cook. Cooling addresses storage temperature, not the cooking contamination check.
