Skyrim enchanted gear: check Arcane Blacksmith before improving it

An enchanted item can require Arcane Blacksmith before it can be improved. A high Smithing skill is not the same as having the required perk selected. Check that gate before replacing materials or assuming the item is permanently unusable at an improvement station.

Reviewed 2026-10-15 · Base Skyrim Smithing concepts; Special Edition, unique items and perk overhauls need their own checks

Inspect the perk, not just the skill number

Open the Smithing perk tree and inspect Arcane Blacksmith's actual state and requirements. The base requirement is associated with Smithing 60, but reaching a skill requirement does not mean every perk in the tree has been acquired.

If the selected item is enchanted, confirm the perk gate first. Repeatedly returning to the station with more raw material does not address a missing permission to improve enchanted gear.

Check the selected item rather than the equipment category alone

Read the material required by the item at the relevant improvement station. A valid perk and the wrong material are still an incomplete setup. Use the selected item's displayed requirement instead of assuming every piece of its appearance or category consumes the same material.

Unique items can also have their own improvement behavior. The community reference for Ancient Shrouded Armor, for example, lists leather and Arcane Blacksmith for improvement while noting that ordinary material perks do not provide the usual additional benefit. Do not assume the perk makes every unique item improve equally.

Account for mods before following a base-game threshold

A perk overhaul can change requirements. One mod author's documented change lowers Arcane Blacksmith's skill requirement from 60 to 40, illustrating why a modded tree can disagree with a base-game guide.

For a modded character, read the installed overhaul's description and the perk currently shown in your game. Do not install a perk-changing mod just to conceal an unexplained mismatch. First identify whether the missing requirement is the perk, the material or an item-specific limitation.

Quick answers

Does reaching the skill requirement automatically grant Arcane Blacksmith?

Check whether the perk is acquired in your tree. A skill threshold and a selected perk are different states.

Does the perk guarantee that every unique item improves the same amount?

No. Check the item's improvement rules and any relevant mod changes.

Sources & version notes

The enchanted-item gate and unique-item example were checked against Skyrim community references. A mod author's description independently documents its change to the base threshold. No mod was installed or recommended, and this is not a maximum-Smithing exploit guide.
