Stardew Valley crop deadlines: will your seeds survive the season?
Before buying seeds near the end of a season, add the crop’s growth time to today’s date. The result must land on day 28 or earlier unless that crop also grows in the next season. A cheap seed that cannot mature is still a loss.

Count growing nights, not calendar squares
The planting day does not count as a day of growth. A crop listed as taking four days needs four growing nights. Plant it on day 1, water it each day, and its first harvest is day 5.
Use this planning rule: expected harvest date = planting date + growth days + nights lost to missed watering. Treat it as a baseline estimate. Fertilizer, professions and special crop rules can change the calculation, so check the seed and crop details before relying on a modified schedule.
Check the last safe planting day
An outdoor season lasts 28 days. For a crop that cannot continue into the next season, subtract its growth time from 28. That gives the last planting date under uninterrupted normal growth.
Parsnips take four days and grow in spring. A parsnip planted and watered on Spring 24 can be harvested on Spring 28. Plant the same seed on Spring 25 and the baseline harvest falls after the season ends. Do not buy that late batch expecting a normal spring harvest.
Leave room for a missed watering
Ordinary crops do not die merely because you miss one day of watering, but that missed growing night delays the harvest. A crop planted at the last possible moment has no spare day. Losing one night can turn a safe purchase into a crop that withers at the season boundary.
If you are still learning the daily routine, choose a smaller patch and finish watering it before leaving the farm. A manageable patch is easier to protect than a larger investment whose schedule already depends on perfect attendance. This is a planning recommendation, not a claim that one crop is always the most profitable.
Separate a first harvest from repeat harvests
Some crops regrow after a harvest, while others must be replanted. Getting one harvest before day 28 does not mean you will get the repeat harvests you imagined when comparing seed prices. Check the first-growth and regrowth times separately.
Multi-season crops are a different case: they can remain alive when the next season is also one of their growing seasons. Do not extend that exception to every plant. This deadline check concerns ordinary outdoor fields; greenhouses, island farming and modded calendars need their own rules.
When your plan breaks
| What happens | What to change |
|---|---|
| The crop is still alive but not ready | Recount the growing nights and any missed watering. Do not count the planting day as completed growth. |
| Everything withered on the first morning of the next season | Check the crop’s allowed seasons. Ordinary outdoor crops die at a season change if they cannot grow in the new season. |
| The expected second harvest never arrived | Check the regrowth interval and how many days remained after the first harvest. A first harvest does not guarantee another. |
| A fertilizer schedule disagrees with the simple formula | Use the growth time for your actual modifiers. The unmodified deadline is a baseline, not a speed-farming calculator. |
Quick answers
Can I plant parsnips on Spring 24?
Under standard four-day growth, yes, if you water on planting day and do not miss a required growing night. The expected harvest is Spring 28.
Does forgetting to water immediately kill a crop?
Ordinary crops pause growth instead. The delayed schedule can still cause a loss when the season ends.
Does every new farm start with parsnip seeds?
No. The standard starter-seed advice has a Meadowlands Farm exception. Check your actual starting supplies rather than buying around an assumed opening.
