The Sims 4 object rotation on PC: fixed turns versus a free angle
Rotating an object by a fixed step and turning it freely are different Build Mode actions. EA documents right-click rotation on PC and a mouse-plus-Alt method for a finer angle. Start with the selected object and choose the action that matches the placement you want.

Pick up the object in Build Mode first
Enter Build Mode and select the object you intend to place. Check that you are manipulating the object rather than only moving the camera around it.
Choose a clear comparison position before fine placement. It is easier to diagnose rotation on an open part of the lot than while several surrounding objects obscure the selected item's outline.
Choose fixed rotation or a free angle
EA's PC mouse instructions use right-click to rotate the selected object in 45-degree steps, followed by left-click to place it. Use this when the desired direction aligns with those steps.
For a finer angle, EA describes holding the object with the left mouse button and holding Alt while moving the mouse to turn it. Release when it faces the intended direction. Keyboard and controller instructions differ, so do not mix a console button sequence into a PC mouse attempt.
Check the placed result before decorating around it
Suppose you want a chair angled toward a corner rather than parallel to a wall. First achieve the intended angle with the chosen rotation method, then place it. Do not keep pressing the fixed-step control while expecting a small free-angle adjustment.
After positioning furniture, check the arrangement in Live Mode and ask a Sim to use the relevant object. Treat visual placement and the intended use as two checks before filling the surrounding space. This is a practical acceptance step, not a claim that every decorative arrangement remains usable.
When your plan breaks
| What happens | What to change |
|---|---|
| The object only turns in large steps | Check whether you are using the fixed 45-degree rotation instead of the documented free-angle mouse action. |
| The camera moves but the object does not | Confirm Build Mode and the selected object before trying the placement action. |
| A controller guide does not match my keyboard and mouse | Use the instructions for the actual platform and control setup. |
| The room looks right but the intended use fails | Test the object in Live Mode and revise the surrounding placement before adding more decoration. |
Quick answers
Is every rotation restricted to 45-degree steps?
EA also documents a free-angle mouse method using Alt. Follow the correct control instructions for your setup.
Does this guide require a placement cheat?
The rotation workflow here uses EA's ordinary rotation instructions. Overlapping-object cheats are a separate feature.
